Kathirvel Kaaka : Thaipusam 2021

Mojo Projects present Kathirvel Kaaka (Murugan Devotional Songs), a Thaipusam special dedicated to ardent devotees of Lord Muruga. This collection of songs is sung by prominent and upcoming Malaysian singers. The music, composed by Thiban and Raguraman, features live musical instruments performed by musicians in India.

The songs vary in terms of musical genre, beats and rhythm. A total of 10 songs have been composed and recorded with music videos as standalone content was premiered on Astro Vaanavil, Astro Vinmeen and Astro Ulagam during this year Thaipusam festival. The songs are divided into 2 categories which is 5 songs sung by children and 5 songs sung by adult artistes.

These Murugan devotional songs will see the vocals of Raguraman, TMS Sivakanthan, Sharmila Sivaguru, Siddarth, Hashmitha Selvam, Jayashree Maran, Yogashri Maran, Kashika Selvam, Haraniya, Reelosiniy, Suthiksha Baloo, Paaviena Pubalan, Thurgaashini Selvakumar and Aghalya Manimohan. The locations for these songs were carefully picked to included temples and landscapes that are relevant to the devotional feel.

The annual Thaipusam festival is celebrated in honour of Lord Murugan, who represents virtue, youth, and power. Devotees seek blessings and fulfil their vows by carrying milk pots as offerings. Many also carry kavadi – structures of steel and wood – and pierce their bodies with steel rods, among other things. The Malaysian Hindu community notably celebrates Thaipusam in Batu Caves, a sacred place for adherents of the faith. Other places that are sites for Thaipusam festivities are the Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple, also known as the Waterfall Hill Temple, in Penang and the Arulmigu Subramaniyar Kallumalai Temple in Ipoh, Perak.
